After a few short and a few long journeys, we found ourselves on the temple route, starting in Orchha,
a town with a massive fort, many palaces and temples, all beautifully well preserved। We spent a day here, soaking up the
atmosphere, and imagining we were living in those times!, running up and down the winding, hap hazard staircases of the palaces and forts।
The next day, we took a shared taxi with a Dutch guy to
Khajaraho, to the renowned temples of erotic sculptures there.
Compared to Orchha, I really didn't like the town of Kajaraho, as we were both feeling a little off colour, and the amount of hawkers really bugged me!. We had our first night there, and planned to get up early, as advised, to check out the temples in the very early morning, before the sun is hot. But after a bad nights sleep and tiredness from the day before, we slept in. Maurice was ill that morning, and so when I got up, went to the temple. At 11.oo, the sun was boiling, and I walked into each temple and out of it again, not really looking at what I was looking at, so missed all the amazing art preserved in these beautiful temples. My only aim was to see if I could actually make it from one temple to another, as it was so hot ... and they are not that far apart at all!!, what a fool.
The next day though, when Maurice was feeling better, and I was feeling worse, Maurice went around the temple enclave and saw some naughty art, that if you are lucky, when I manage to I may post on here, oh er Mrs!
We finally got out of that town, again with a shared taxi and again with the Dutch guy, and drove to Satna, where we said our goodbyes and we jumped on the train to Varanasi. 2tier sleeper...yeyyyy!!! 2 tier is one of the nicest ways to travel. Your own clean bedsheets, blanket and pillow, enough space on your bad to wiggle, stretch and sit, and a curtain to block those staring Indians. The bed was SO much comfier than our hotel bed too, another blessing!.
