Lithuania - Vilnius (text 06.06.2006)

Our second day here and we woke up pretty early to go to a market just outside the city. We got there by a trolly bus that took us basically just a little bit past where we walked to yesterday. We couldve walked it, but the sweet girl at the reception here told us that it was nottoo safe to walk... bless!. It was a big market, with great food, wonderful fruit and veg and all the usual clothes stands. Maurice bought yet another pair of shoes (where on earth are we going to put these ones?!?) , after we'd eaten our fill of food and looked at as many shops as we could, we walked back into the city aiming for the hostel again (despite the fact that it was early in the afternoon) and came across the KGB museum and decided that we would go there then insead of waiting until during the week.
It was such a good museum, really well presented, and really depressing. When the KGB left the building, it was turned into a museum without doing many changes, especially to the cells. The cells were quite grim, especially the padded cells and the cell with the door that was locked, but with prisoners belongings in it. It was quite interesting to hear that there was only one escapee during the whole time that it was in use.
The rest of the museam was also very interesting, about the whole history of this era in Lithuania, some touching accounts and artifacts left behind.
Have had a nice and easy evening here, meeting a few people in the hostel.
